You’re eating right, working out and using really great products but maybe your skin is still a little… ehh. If this is you then grab a seat. We’re about to break down some common habits that can totally sabotage your skin!
Dirty pillowcases, makeup brushes or phone
Sleeping on a dirty pillowcase, using dirty makeup brushes and not cleaning your phone often are all ways to keep and spread bacteria on your skin. They all can get pretty dirty pretty quick as well.
Ideally, you should be sleeping on a 100% silk pillowcase and washing it 1 to 2x a week. Brushes should be washed and allowed to completely dry 1x a week and your phone should be wiped daily.
A silk pillowcase is gentle on skin and hair, plus they feel good. Here is one we love.
Dead skin buildup
Regular exfoliation is one of the keys to radiant skin. You should aim to exfoliate 2 to 3 times a week. You should also be using different types of exfoliators. There’s the manual exfoliators that have a gritty feel. They manually removes dead skin.
I’m going to stop right here and just say it right now St Ives Apricot Scrub is terrible! It has large pieces that will too abrasive for skin and cause tiny tears that can lead to irritation and possibly infection. Avoid it!
There are also enzyme exfoliators that use enzymes from fruits or sugar, such as pineapple or papaya fruits, to break up the bonds that hold dead skin cells together.
It is a manual and enzyme exfoliator all in one.
Exfoliation is an art form, do it too little your skin going to be dull, do it too much and your skin is going to become irritated and sensitive. The key is to find a good exfoliator that works for you. Don’t forget to exfoliate your neck, hands and lips, too!
Using harsh skincare products or the wrong products
Is your skin truly oily or are you using harsh products, the wrong products or over exfoliating? This will cause your skin to produce more oil in an effort to protect it.
Many skincare mistakes are made by applying products that are wrong for your skin. Don’t think you have to commit to one skin type. Most people have combination skin and your skin can fluctuate through the month and through the seasons. So, even though your skin may be normal in the summer it may be dry or combination in the winter.
Don’t think that you have to apply a product to your entire face. We are huge fans of “area” applications and area masking. Is your chin and nose oily? Then apply a mask or products for oily skin in just that area.
You always want to make sure you have covered your basics, too.
Getting a good night’s sleep, not picking at your face, working out, drinking plenty of water and eating right are all basics of good skin.
We also highly recommend using soft 100% organic cotton washcloth on your face, like the ones linked below. Most of all it is important to remember that your skin is a delicate ecosystem all of its own and needs to be treated as such.
